BRIEF COMPANY PROFILE

A Successful and Family-owned Company

With a pioneering history and celebrating 135 years of heritage, Boehringer Ingelheim marks its global presence as one of the pharmaceutical industry’s top 20 companies and as a global leader in biopharmaceuticals.

Founded in 1885 by Albert Boehringer (1861-1939) in Ingelheim am Rhein, Germany, Boehringer Ingelheim started out as a small tartar factory, employing just 28 people, that manufactured chemical compounds used by pharmacies and dyeing works.  Within its first few years, the business surged as demand increased. In 1893, Boehringer made the ground-breaking discovery that lactic acid can be produced in mass quantities by means of bacteria. This revelation allowed the company to move into large-scale "biotech" production and by the time of Albert Boehringer’s death in 1939, the company employed 1,500 people and was the leading manufacturer of lactic acid.

To this day, the Boehringer family continues to lead the company with the innovative research-driven focus to fill the unmet treatment needs of patients with cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, diseases of the central nervous system, metabolic diseases, virological diseases and oncology.

As a global, family-owned business, Boehringer Ingelheim combines the ambitious spirit of its pioneer, continuously looking for opportunities to grow, with the care of the family, always putting people at the heart of everything they do.

Headquartered in Ingelheim am Rhein, Germany, the global enterprise of Boehringer Ingelheim today employs more than 51,000 employees and provides the entire value chain, from research to manufacturing for the three business areas: Human Pharma, Animal Health, and Biopharmaceutical Contract Manufacturing.

The Danish office is located in Copenhagen and is the home of around 200 dedicated employees within Human Pharma and Animal Health.

As an independent, family-owned business, the key focus at Boehringer Ingelheim is on long-term, sustainable action. To achieve this goal requires sound financing and organic corporate growth.

As a world-leading, research-driven pharmaceutical company, Boehringer Ingelheim achieved net sales of 19 billion euros in 2019 with significant investments of almost 3.5 billion euros in R&D driving innovation and enabling the next generation of medicines that save lives and improve quality of life.
